The Gateways

The Gateways help mark entry into University Common. They help locate the University at Johnston Street, Congress and Eraste Landry. At the convergence of Cajundome Boulevard and West Congress, the plan calls for a series of gateways to define and mark each of the corners of the intersection. In this plan, each corner element represents a quarter-circle. The individual elements consist of a sidewalk edge defined by a low wall planted with flowers. A higher wall curving toward the streets with arches over the sidewalks forms the backdrop for a fountain. Mounted on the curved wall are seasonal banners and signage identifying the corner and the facilities in the block.
