The project area extends all the way from Johnston Street to Eraste Landry.
Between Johnston Street and West Congress, Cajundome Boulevard, North College
Drive and Bertrand Drive mark its western edge. At West Congress the site
extends west to the edge of the University Medical center parking lot.
A series of residential neighborhoods define the eastern edge of the project
area and the western edge north of Abdalla Hall. Existing within these
boundaries
are large areas of undeveloped land that separate a diverse range of buildings
and activities encompassing several different administrative concerns and
landscape typologies. The challenge is to connect these diverse elements
and unite them in a larger context without comprising the individuality
of each of these entities. Among the existing facilities to the south of West Congress are the Ira Nelson Horticulture Center and the Greenhouse Research Center, Blackham Coliseum and support barns, the UL Lafayette Agriculture center, the University Print Shop, intramural fields, fraternity and sorority rows, and the Cajundome with the new Convention Center. On the north side of West Congress Street on either side of Cajundome Boulevard are the USGS National Wetlands Research Center, NOAA Estuarine Habitats and Coastal Fisheries Research Center and Abdalla Hall. North of Abdalla Hall is a residential development between Cajundome Boulevard and Robert Lee Circle that extends to Eraste Landry. Much of the area north of West Congress is currently undeveloped land. |
