Initial meetings involved individuals representing various interests in the area as presently constituted. The representatives for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette consisted of the Development Office, the UL Lafayette Foundation, Physical Plant, and the departments of Applied Life Sciences, Renewable Resources and Intramurals. Other community representatives were also present, such as LEDA, the Mid-Winter Fair in Blackham Coliseum and the Sheriff's Department. Those departments, organizations and 13 members of the Community Design Workshop (five faculty and eight students) met to establish the scope and parameters of the project. The needs and interests defined in these meetings ranged from requirements for academic research facilities to the desire for additional sports and entertainment opportunities. Adding even more complexity to the project was the desire to link this large and diverse area. Based on these defined concerns, the Community Design Workshop developed a proposal whose unifying theme is the native landscape of this area of Louisiana.
