Second Century Oaks

In addition to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's University Common proposal, the complex also includes the Second Century Oaks project. As a supplement to the original planting of majestic live oak trees, University Common was the site for 40 new live oaks planted on January 1,2001. One hundred years after the first planting of live oaks on the main campus, the Second Century Oaks planting concluded the University's Centennial Celebration. This project also included the commemoration of both live oaks planting with a monument within the research park. The monument would offer information about both live oak plantings and would display a map showing where the 40 new live oaks were planted. The live oaks were used as an urban design tool in an attempt to make a living green urban container for the street. The oaks also help to create spaces within the university research park, and help to pronounce gateways into University Common.
