Connecting Downtown Lafayette to the North End | ||||||
The Jefferson Boulevard extension is the traditional, commercial street
of Lafayette. Most recently it has been renovated, thus providing Lafayette
with an important civic space in the downtown area. The extension of the street
to Simcoe Street would provide the northern neighborhoods easy access to downtown.
The extension would be of similar design except for Cypress trees lining the
boulevard. At the intersection of Simcoe Street and Jefferson Boulevard, a
small park has been designed. This triangular shaped area would be enhanced
with sitting areas, additional landscaping, and the extension of a bike path
from Simcoe Street. In addition to the Jefferson Boulevard extension, this district is bounded by Evangeline Thwy. to the east, Simcoe Street to the north, and Jefferson Boulevard to the south. This district is geographically and economically poised to be developed as a social services district. It is located geographically in the center of the Simcoe Street corridor, readily accessible by the Evangeline Thwy., and positioned on Bus Route #10. The Green House and the Senior Arts Center are already located in the district. The Workshop saw the opportunity to develop the social services district with a Community Development and Education Center, branch library, police precinct, and a health services building. These buildings could be located on Jefferson Boulevard and help reinforce this street as an important corridor within the city of Lafayette. The buildings operate urbanistically by establishing an edge definition to the street and allowing for courtyards as entry spaces into the buildings. |
