implementation

The Workshop designed three housing types generated from architectural models already present within these neighborhoods. These housing types were then inserted into the vacant properties in each neighborhood. The square footages of these housing types were based on Habitat for Humanity's criteria whereby a one-bedroom home (Acadian Cottage) would be 790 square feet, a two-bedroom home (Shotgun) would be 950 square feet, and a three-bedroom home (Craftsman) would be 1,050 square feet. Each house was designed with a porch to foster interaction with people on the street. Each plan had a number of variations so that the neighborhoods would not develop a "cookie cutter" appearance. Each plan type minimized circulation while allowing movement to take place throughout the sequence of rooms.     The massing of the housing has taken advantage of a variety of compound roof forms, which is typical of the housing type studied. The houses are raised off of the ground, a typical existing neighborhood detail. Skirts were designed to wrap around the base allowing for ventilation. Traditional materials including siding, double-hung windows, and French doors were introduced into the designs. These details helped the housing types to be compatible within the neighborhoods.
