The Grant Street corridor provides a critical connection that crosses Cameron,
Simcoe, Johnston Street, and Jefferson Boulevard. It connects these streets
and their bike paths to the new multi-modal facility. The Grant Street area
would be designed as a linear park with new planting, bike paths, lighting,
and sidewalks. The corridor could be developed into entertainment, commercial,
and urban housing districts that could revitalize this area. This urban design
strategy occupies land that was once used by the railroad. Tracks and support
buildings no longer exist so this vacant land could be developed into a natural,
linear park. The park would connect the major streets in the center of the
city to the multi-modal transit building. Following the lead of the Grant
Street Dancehall, the building could be expanded into entertainment and cultural
facilities. Additional commercial development could occupy the lower floor
of the building types, thereby providing residential space for the top. Row
housing, apartment blocks, and double shotgun housing could infill the remaining
district. Hotels were designed on the corners of Jefferson Boulevard and Evangeline
Thwy. to make an entry gate into the downtown area from the interstate. |
