Historically, large-scale infrastructure projects like the I-49 Connector have excluded the design of the public realm. The Community Design Workshop- informed by the charrettes, public meetings, research, and design process- focused on infusing public space into the project. The inclusion of public space allows the I-49 Connector to become the "front door" and "living room" for
Lafayette. This linear garden, framed by commercial districts, helps buffer
existing neighborhoods from both visual impact and noise intrusion. The
Community Design Workshop, in collaboration with the community, developed
this urban
design project as an instrument that weaves together the fabric of the city. |
