Carencro is characteristically a small town with approximately 6,800 residents. It is situated along Interstate 49 and is approximately five miles north of Lafayette. The town possesses a distinguished, traditional city center centered around St. Peter Street. Carencro is fortunate to be adjacent to I-49, which is developing as a commercial and light industrial corridor. Carencro has two distinct traditional neighborhoods, one focused around St. Peter Street and the original eight-block grid. The other is organized around Assumption Church. The park system in Carencro has been developed around the parish parks and Pelican Park. As in many American small towns, Carencro possesses a quality of place developed through their traditional architecture and local building practices that are threatened by urban sprawl and 20th century commercialism. Current unplanned growth trends and existing urban assets made up of commercial districts, parks, neighborhoods and existing infrastructure became the focus of the Community Design Workshop's study. The Workshop recognized that the city needed to develop these urban assets through a flexible master plan. Assets such as parks and neighborhoods could connect with new streets, develop new neighborhoods and parks, and design commercial strategies for I-49, while managing growth. The Workshop also recognized the need to establish architectural guidelines based on traditional forms of architecture and detail.
