				NEXT PAGE TOPICS introduction director students faculty university community	The School of Architecture provides expertise in urban planning and landscape design, as well as architecture, housing, and preservation. The Community Design Workshop, located in the School of Architecture at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, helps cities, small towns, and neighborhoods visualize their potential as communities. The Workshop has been operating since 1994. It has comleted a series of projects including urban design and planning strategies in Breaux Bridge and the transformation of Lafayette's Oil Center from a suburban office park into an urban pedestrian landscape. The Downtown Development Association collaborated with the Workshop in developing an urban code for the downtown area of Lafayette. The Workshop has completed the planning and redevelopment of the Simcoe Street Corridor Project for Lafayette. This project's aim was to repair and remake an African-American neighborhood ravaged by 20th century circumstances. The Workshop has also worked closely with the planning organizations of Lafayette in designing new streets, formulation a new arterial design program, and creating plans for a five-lane, north-south beltway for Lafayette Parish. The Workshop's method is to establish a collaborative effort with the communities involved through public workshops and charrettes, and by opening an office in the neighborhood or dowtown being studied. This process allows both faculty and students to be engaged in context. It also gives the community easy access to the Workshop on a day-to-day basis. By collaborating with public and private organizations, the Workshop is effectively able to integrate the ideas of the community with those of the larger realm.
